Year 1802: Robert Chambers was born
Robert Chambers (1802-1871) was a Scottish author and publisher born at Peebles on 10th July 1802. He was educated in the local schools, and had unusual literary taste and ability. In the beginning of 1832, William Chambers started a weekly publication under the title of "Chambers's Edinburgh Journal". "Chambers's Encyclopaedia (1859-1868)", with Dr Andrew Findlater as editor, was published under the superintendence of Robert Chambers and his brother William Chambers.
Taking a keen interest in geology, in 1844, Chambers completed the dictation of his "Vestiges of the Natural History of Creation" to his wife, Anne Kirkwood, at their holiday home in St Andrews. "The Book of Days" was Chambers's last major publication, and perhaps his most elaborate. Chambers died on 17th March 1871.
