Year 1908: Bal Gangadhar Tilak is arrested for sedition by the British
"Bal Gangadhar Tilak (1856 – 1920) was an Indian radical activist and teacher. He was one of the three memebers of the Lal Bal Pal group. Tilak was also one of the greatest advocates of self-rule (or, Swaraj) in India. He famously said, ""Swarajya is my birthright and I shall have it!"".
Tilak joined the Indian National Congress in 1890. Tilak had been tried for sedition chargesthrices by the British India Government. In 1980, he was arrested and tried on the charge of sedition. He had published fiery artcles in his newspaper, Kesari. Muhammad Ali Jinnah, then a lawyer, defended him. However, the nine-member foreign jury found him guilty and Tilak was sent to prison for six years.
Mahatma Gandhi called him “the Maker of Modern India,” and Jawaharlal Nehru, independent India’s first prime minister, described him as “the Father of the Indian Revolution.”
